After threats that the Northampton Balloon Festival would have to cease as an annual event due to funding issues, its hosting has been confirmed following the signing of a three year contract with Billing Aquadrome, Northampton. This year the festival celebrates its 23rd year highlighting the great support it has received. It was started by a group of local balloonists who wanted to put Northampton on the “ballooning map”. They had attended a number of ballooning events, which inspired them to organise one of their own.
The first Northampton Balloon Festival took place in 1990 on the Racecourse in the centre of Northampton.
In 2009, the Borough Council had to look at where savings could be made in their budget. After public consultation, and much debate by the politicians, they decided that it could no longer fund the Balloon Festival. Once the decision had been announced, there was a public outcry following which appeared many articles in the local press, on social networking sites and on websites all supporting the event.
Members of Chiltern Region Ballooning Club were determined to see the event remain in the ballooning calendar. Their keenness paid-off and the Balloon Festive remains on the calendar. Billing Aquadrome is experienced in hosting a number of large events during the year and is easily accessible.
2011 Northampton Balloon Festival has been widely recognised as one of the best Balloon Festivals in recent years, the balloons managed to fly 5 out of 6 slots with a spectacular night glow on the Saturday evening.
The Balloon Festival is a great week-end family event and an opportunity to speak to balloonists about their hobby.
