Fancy a get-away-from-it-all weekend? Somewhere you can escape the frenzy of the weekday working grind, get closer to nature and keep the kids happy too? How about a short break in Northampton? Not quite what you had in mind? Well, how about this for a plan.
Firstly, book yourselves into a serviced apartment in Northampton. Cotels, the specialists in this kind of accommodation, have a choice of one and two-bedroomed apartments right in the town centre, within easy reach off all the High street shops, theatres, cinemas and lots of restaurants.
Your apartment will be like a home from home. Not a cramped hotel room, but one or two separate bedrooms each with a bathroom, a fully fitted kitchen with all the modern appliances you’d expect including a hob and oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and a washer/dryer….and of course an iron and ironing board. The comfortable lounge has its own satellite TV with sports included, there’s even a DVD player and free broadband access. Luxury bed linen and bath towels are provided. There’s free parking for the family car in secure underground parking spaces and in some apartments, free membership of a residents’ gym is included. You get all this for little more than the cost of one hotel room.
So now you’ve settled into your home from home, you can start to explore some of the fantastic visitor attractions around the town.
If nature is your thing, there are three stunningly beautiful reservoirs within ten miles of the town – Pitsford, Ravensthorpe and Hollowell – all offering a range of facilities from fishing and bird-watching to sailing, canoeing and cycling along miles of forest and lakeside tracks. There are cafés and visitor centres, play areas and gift shops. You can hire a bicycle at the Pitsford Visitor Centre and take the family on a 7.5 mile gentle ride around Pitsford Water which is the sixth largest body of water in the UK.
Just 18 miles due east of the town, in the Nene Valley, lie Stanwick Lakes. Once a gravel extraction site, the resulting lakes have been beautifully landscaped to create a stunning natural wildlife reserve and visitor attraction. There are picnic and barbecue areas, adventure playgrounds and assault courses, cycling paths (and a bike hire shop) and canoes and kayaks for hire as well as a café in the spectacular visitor centre with views over the lake.
And when you’ve done the lakes and the forests you can always take the kids off to Wicksteed Park in nearby Kettering – just 30 minutes’ drive away. Here you’ll find 150 acres of beautiful parkland with no less than 30 exciting rides and its own steam railway.
At the end of a long day, it’s time to go home to your serviced apartment in central Northampton, maybe stopping for some essential supplies on the way. You can either rustle up your evening meal in the modern kitchen, or take a walk to the town centre and choose from the wide range of restaurants – maybe even take in a show at the renowned Royal & Derngate Theatre.
Serviced apartments – the only way for a relaxing stay.
