Celebrating 50 years of Milton Keynes

At the beginning of this year, Milton Keynes officially turned 50 years old!

In celebrating its anniversary, the 50 year old ‘new town’ has been hosting multiple events and activities for residents and visitors alike; from year long offers and discounts at local attractions to a Peter Andre concert, there is a celebration for everyone, whether you’re a Milton Keynes resident or a visitor.

Cotels celebrating MK50

Where did it all start? Back on the 23rd January 1967, Milton Keynes was born. Over the last 50 years, we’ve seen it become a global leader for low carbon living, become home to the UK’s most popular theatre outside of London and host the home of British code-breaking, Bletchley Park.

So far, we’ve seen the MK50 celebrations include the creation and cutting of a giant 6ft x 4ft cake and a scenic five mile bike ride set off from Furzton Lake and, as autumn steadily approaches, the celebrations are still in full swing. If you’re looking to celebrate Milton Keynes’ 50th this year, here are some of our top picks:

What’s a birthday celebration without lots of delicious food? On the 16th September, Linford Manor Park will be open to families and friends looking to enjoy a variety of hot food, locally brewed beer and a farmers market, along with chef’s demonstrations, live music and lots of activities for children.

MKFoodFest is free to enter and will run from 11am to 5pm, so be sure to bring along a picnic blanket and a big appetite and enjoy the MK50 event held in the stunning Parks Trust location.

MK City Expo

As Milton Keynes is renowned for being a thriving business hub, this event is an opportunity for local businesses to introduce their products and services to the community and meet new potential customers. The MK City Expo event will run between 9:30am and 4pm on the 18th October and will host 4 speakers and over 40 stand holders, giving you the opportunity to be inspired and receive advice and ideas from local experts.

If you’re attending the event from outside of the area and are looking for a luxury serviced apartment to stay in for the night, why not check out some of the apartments we have available?

Milton Keynes Winter Half Marathon 2017

We’ve had a family friendly MK50 event, one for business people and now here’s one for the sporty folk! This year, the MK Winter Half Marathon has teamed up with Mk50 and will see participants run along the Grand Union Canal and through the Milton Keynes parks.

The marathon will start at Newlands Park on the 10th December at 10am and costs £26 for UKA Affiliated runners.

Here at Cotels, we also wanted to get involved in the MK50 celebrations, so we buried a time capsule full of memorabilia from 2017 to celebrate the history and future of Milton Keynes. We were thrilled to see the Mayor of Milton Keynes get involved, as well as receive treasures from local businesses and organisations to place inside the capsule. These included a hockey puck from the Milton Keynes Lightning Ice Hockey team, a shirt and scarf from MK Dons F.C and an MK50 flag, bag and what’s on guide from Milton Keynes Council, to name just a few.

There’s our round-up of top picks for MK50 events, how do you plan on celebrating?
